THE AIDS MEMORIAL SCULPTURE IN BERLIN
The AIDS MEMORIAL SCULPTURE in Berlin is located in the center of town,
near what is known as Kaiser Wilhelm Gedaechtniskirche. This church was
heavily bombed and damaged during World War II, but rather than tearing
down the ruins a new structure was added to it - making space for the old
to coexist with the new -- now the old and the new structures have become
a Memorial to the the war, and the destruction and suffering it caused.
Bahnof Zoo, the train station with most traffic, be it that of commuters
or of tourists, is at a two minute walk from the AIDS Memorial Sculpture
and Gedaechtniskirche. Due to its historic significance and central location
this site is visited by city residents and tourists alike. The Bahnhof
Zoo area is also known for the presence of its heroin addicts; it is especially
befitting that the sculpture be close to them too. We have lost so many
friends and relatives to AIDS, which is also caused by drug abuse, by contaminated
needles and blood.... The Memorial is easy to visit: walk, take a bike
or rollerskates, a car or a bus, the subway or the train....
You too might enjoy coming here. This might be the place to live through
intense moments of joy, love, anger, pain, sorrow, mourning and again joy
and love...
This sculpture only exists in my dreams and in virtual reality... but
anything is possible... and maybe you can help make the sculpture become
a reality! or
